Taos Observations (pg1)

I need to take this opportunity to mention my feelings and observations I’ve had here in Taos, New Mexico.  First, if anyone tells you the Hippy movement has died, they have never been to Taos..  I feel like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone, I am close to being in a real universe but it’s not quite right.  The  way people drive is really nuts. They will stop for a pedestrian 150 feet down the street (and that is a good thing) BUT when it comes to other drivers, they would rather block an interstection than allow someone to cross traffic. Absolutely the rudest drivers I’ve met.. Which makes NO SENSE at all... these people are the nicest and friendliest people I've ever met ... must be something happens when they get behind the wheel of a 2 ton guided weapon..

Now the dress code is just fun here. Imagine you and your friends all went to grandma’s house and went up in the attic and found a couple dresser trunks full of old clothes and you all just opened them up and put on the clothes in the dark and then you all went off to work… well that’s the dress code here..

Oh.. Oh.. can you imagine that the local radio station tries to find out why there have been power outages and the local power company doesn’t even respond and apparently that is okay around here..  of course I noticed that the local radio station (KTAO.com) which touts itself as the biggest solar powered radio station in the country seems to go off the air when the local power goes off (I know this because I live just down the street from them and I have the lights go off at the same time).

Taos is an interesting place to say the least.

If you look at the store hours on the door of most the small businesses here you eventually realize that those hours are more of a suggested starting point of when they will be open. it can vary as much as .. well.. sometimes they just don't open at all, and sometimes they stayed all night meditating and learning new yoga techniques

Well, they just had a special vote in town to decide how to pay for a new jail and Courthouse.(the old one is not up to the Americans with Disabilities standards and the buildings have Radon gas levels that are evidently leathal) Of course the location they need to move it to (which is not on the ballot for voting) a half block from the local high school. The vote is about deciding to use a addition to the sales tax or not.. the folks against it have already said they don't want a property tax to pay for it. yet, if they vote it down then the state will come in and raise the property taxes for them.. I find it odd that the location they are going to build on is not up for discussion, it makes me wonder who exactly on the board owned that property next to the high school... AND..

It only gets better... I've found a small community just west of Taos called Carson and talk about a hoot.. I ran across a couple of women from New Jersey at a yard sale and we keep crossing paths. well, I was driving around out in the boonies and I ran across them near the local market/deli (the one the totes a skull and crossbones flag in front). Well, they told me this place had the best hero sandwich around (of course the closest anything is 17 miles away). So I go in and there sits the owner and a poet.. yes.. a poet... well, I decide to order a hero sandwich and sit down to eat it there.. because I just have a feeling this is gonna get better... well , it did.. seems the poet has had a lot of computer issues getting a new computer and having lost alot of old data. I offered to recover it for him. We went back to his place.. a nice log cabin with no running water or normal electricity (he has (4) 25 watt solar panels to run his laptop and a couple of lights.. He did however have a phone line which I found to be odd 4 miles down in "the carson" , down a dirt road that I really was glad I had a 4 wheel drive Jeep.. well, I took his old laptop drive home and brought him his data the following day. He has since bought me lunch for 3 days .. and thats good with me... I like being bought food...
